Sword Stands: One of the most popular and traditional methods of displaying a Katana is using a sword stand. At Mini Katana, we offer several options and recommendations to help you showcase your prized sword in an elegant and safe manner. The best way to display your Katana depends on your personal preferences and the space available in your home or office. Other swords have their unique cultural and historical significance, depending on the region and time period in which they were used. They are not only weapons but also symbols of social status, honor, and craftsmanship. Historical and Cultural Context: Katanas hold a special place in Japanese history and culture, being the primary weapon of the samurai warrior class. In comparison, other swords may have various grip and guard designs, depending on their origin and intended use. The guard, or Tsuba, is usually round or square and features intricate designs that reflect the culture and artistry of Japan. ![]() This allows for greater control and power when wielding the sword. Grip and Guard: Katanas have a long handle, typically wrapped in a traditional Japanese style with cord or leather, designed to accommodate a two-handed grip. Other swords may be forged using different techniques and materials, depending on the region and time period in which they were made. This process results in a strong, sharp, and resilient weapon. In contrast, other swords, such as European longswords, may have straight, double-edged blades that are suited for both cutting and thrusting.Ĭonstruction: Katanas are crafted using traditional Japanese forging techniques, which involve folding and differentially heat-treating the steel to create a blade with a harder cutting edge and a softer, more flexible spine. The curvature of the blade allows for more effective slashing motions and improves the sword's overall cutting ability. Here are some key differences between a Katana and other swords:īlade Shape: Katanas have a distinct, curved, single-edged blade, which is designed primarily for cutting. A "Katana," on the other hand, refers specifically to a Japanese sword, characterized by its unique features and design. The term "sword" is a general term that encompasses a wide variety of bladed weapons used across different cultures and historical periods. ![]()

The goal is to have the garlic slowly infuse its flavor with the oil while you prepare the other items so it is important not to let the garlic burn. This will give the oil and pork chops a mild garlic flavor. Do not smash into small pieces! Add the smashed garlic cloves to the oil. Peel each clove of garlic and smash so that they are still held together in large pieces. Place a frying pan large enough to fit both pork chops over medium heat and add the vegetable oil. Season your pork chops with the Goya seasoning salt and black pepper and set aside. I highly recommend reading through all of the steps for the recipe before you begin cooking. I’m going to keep things truly classic as I feel this meal needs no improvement whatsoever. Healthy, cheap, low fat and vegetarian/vegan. When I need to meal prep quickly and cheaply I’ll make salads with red beans (drained of course) as my source of protein. I eat them with rice, macaroni, salads, sautéed veggies and sometimes on their own. Like coconut, I also love red beans, specifically dark red kidney beans. This recipe is more like three recipes because there are three dishes the pork chops, the rice, and the red beans. It wasn’t until I began writing this recipe that I realized I also had coconut rice at my wedding. Professor Lazarus also stressed the importance of daily hassles as a source of stress, arguing that such hassles typically cause more human suffering than major life events. There, he made a case for stress as being part of the broader area of emotion, and made a case for the use of narratives or prototypical stories as an approach to the emotions. He published a sequel to it in 1999, entitled Stress and Emotion: A New Synthesis. In 1984, in collaboration with Susan Folkman (who had obtained her doctorate as his student), Professor Lazarus published Stress, Appraisal and Coping, which became the most widely read and cited academic book in this field. When coping is effective, stress is usually controlled when coping is ineffective, stress mounts and can get out of control, leading to physiological disturbance, subjective distress, and impaired social functioning. A basic premise of his was that stress and coping are reciprocals of each other. Professor Lazarus also emphasized that the way people cope with stress is crucial in their physical, social, and psychological well-being. Professor Lazarus’s concept of appraisal, which had its roots in the work of Magda Arnold, and before that, in Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, eventually became a principal rationale for cognitive-behavior therapy, which became one of the major approaches to psychological treatment beginning in the 1970s. ![]() By documenting how ego defenses such as denial and intellectualization changed the way that participants evaluated the meaning of film events, lowering or raising levels of stress, this celebrated line of work effectively demonstrated the power of appraisal to influence a person’s emotions, as well as their means of coping with emotional stress. He proposed the concept of appraisal to refer to the impact of events on a person’s strivings, and that different patterns of appraisals accounted for the rich array of different emotional states.īeginning in the late 1950s at Berkeley, Professor Lazarus began a rich and impactful series of investigations typically using motion picture films to arouse stress and emotion, and instructional sets designed to bring into play ego defense mechanisms to change the manner by which the film affected the viewer, both subjectively and psychophysiologically. In his theoretical approach to stress and emotion, Professor Lazarus proposed that emotions, far from being intrapsychic feelings, reflected the fate of one’s goals. The 1966 monograph was eventually considered a classic in behavioral science, and its influence was felt in sociology, anthropology, physiology, and medicine. By the 1970s, after interest was stimulated by his influential 1966 monograph, Psychological Stress and the Coping Process, and the work of other academic pioneers, it became apparent that emotion and stress were important not only to the military, but for all of academia. When he began his research and writing at Johns Hopkins, there was little interest in stress or emotion, except on the part of the military. He remained at Berkeley until he became professor emeritus in 1991. SELECT 'Hello Timescale!' as myStr, * FROM generate_series(1,5) You may have done this at some point with a string of text that needed to be repeated for each returned row. Therefore, just like when we select data from a regular table with SQL, we can add more columns of data using other functions or static values. Recall that generate_series() is a Set Returning Function that returns a "table" of data (a set) just as if we had selected it from a table. ![]() To do this, we utilize a standard feature of relational databases and SQL. Now that we understand how to use generate_series(), how do we create some time-series data to insert into TimescaleDB for testing and visualization? (17 rows) How to generate time-series data For example, if we modify the step INTERVAL above to '1 hour 25 minutes', the result only returns 17 rows, the last of which is before the stop value. ![]() However, if the step interval resulted in the stop value being skipped over, it will not be included in your output. As long as the INTERVAL can increment evenly up to the stop date, it will be included. The reason we got 25 rows (representing 25 hours rather than 24 as you might expect) is that the stop value can be reached using the equal one-hour INTERVAL (the step parameter). Notice that the returned dates are inclusive of the start and stop values, just as we saw with the numeric example before. The only difference is that the third parameter, the step INTERVAL used to increment the date, is required for date generation, as shown here: SELECT * from generate_series( Using generate_series() to produce a range of dates is equally straightforward. However, there is an optional third parameter that can be used to specify the increment length, known as the step parameter.įor example, if we wanted to generate rows that counted by two from 0 to 10, we could use this SQL instead: SELECT * from generate_series(0,10,2) ġ0 PostgreSQL generate_series() with dates When used to generate numeric data, generate_series() will increment the values by 1. This will produce output that looks like this: generate_series|įrom this first example, we can see that generate_series() returns sequential numbers between a start parameter and stop parameter. The function is simple and easy to get started with, taking at least two required arguments to specify the start and stop parameters for the generated data. The PostgreSQL documentation calls it a Set Returning Function because it can return more than one row. Generate_series() is a built-in PostgreSQL function that makes it easy to create ordered tables of numbers or dates.
